Yokohama Yamate
Chinese school shared the same origin as Yokohama Overseas Chinese
School. The faculty and the students of the Yokohama Chinese School
were divided into two groups because of the political conflict between
the main land of China and Taiwan. One group remained, but the most
moved out to continue activities in private Huaqiaos' houses reluctantly.
later, under auspice of overseas Chinese, they set up a new school,
"Yokohama Chinese School , Yamate Division". In March,
1957, the school was formally given the name of Chinese School of
Yamate. Since March, 1982, Yamate Chinese School of has grown into
an educational organization consisting of a kindergarten, a primary
education department and a junior education department. Totally
370 students, ranging from the age of 4 to 15, are now enrolled
(60 in kindergarten, 227 in the Primary School and 83 in the Junior
School.)
Aiming at language teaching and culture transmission, Yokohama Yamate
Chinese School provide its students, including Huaqiao and their
children, with scientific knowledge and help them in developing
aesthetic sentiment and noble morals through the courses of Moral
Education, Knowledge Education, Fine Art and Physical Education.
Quite a lot of its graduates are making considerable contribution
to the friendship between China and Japan, as bilinguals. In the
kindergarten, nursing is carried on in the language of Japanese.
In the primary and secondary department, different languages: Huaqiao
or English, is used according to specific subject. Therefore, the
students not only gained knowledge so well as their Japanese equivalent
to cope with the coming qualification test, but also learned the
language of Chinese and Chinese culture. Textbook for language of
Chinese is co-edited by its own faculty and the staff from the Chinese
Language Education Academy of Beijing. Textbook for language of
Japanese is the same as used in native Japanese schools. Besides
Huaqiao teachers, native Japanese teachers and native Chinese teachers,
coming from the Chinese Language Education Center in Beijing, worked
together in the program. Focused on developing students' potentiality,
the school introduced a student-based teaching style, simplifying
teacher's instruction and intensifying students' exercise. Thus,
they impart students sophisticated skills to cope with the modern
international society.
Many Japanese students are seen in Yokohama Yamate Chinese School.
As for nationality, almost half of the students are Japanese, and
Speaking of genetics, one fifth of the students are native Japanese.
Besides private senior school, graduates gained admission to National
Shinagawa prefectural Yokohama municipal and Tokyo metropolitan
high schools.
