The Kobe Chinese
School is composed of a primary department and a junior department.
Totally, 620 students are in program, including 392 in the primary
department and 228 in the junior department. It is the largest Chinese
School in Japan and the largest full time overseas Chinese School
in the world.
In 1999, Kobe Chinese School celebrated its 100th birthday. A hundred
years ago, Liang qichao, in exile in Japan, learning from the lesson
drawn from the failure of Qing Dynasty in the war with Japan, called
on overseas Chinese to give their strong support to education. The
next year, March the 1st, Kobe Chinese School was founded at the
suggestion of Huaqiao from Canton, and had Tuyoshi Inukai as its
first honorable president. In 1914, the Kobe Huaqiang School was
founded by Guangdong Huaqiao. And in 1919, the Chinese School was
founded by Huaqiao from Fujian, Jiangsu, Shandong, Hebei but not
Guangdong. It is different to the Kobe Chinese School and the Kobe
Huaqiang School in teaching the standard language of Chinese. The
Kobe Huaqiang School and the Chinese School both used dialectics
in teaching and were integrated to Hansin Chinese Gongxue in 1928,
which were later united with Kobe Chinese Tongwen school in 1939
to establish Kobe Chinese School and began to teach in standard
language of Chinese as a common language.
Presently, the nationalities of students are: Kajin who have the
Japan nationality in 40% , and others such as Korean, Vietnamese,
American, English, Thailand, Portuguese, Canadian, Indonesian. There
are also some pure-blooded Japanese and 5 native Korean. With such
an international diversity, the school emphasizes on melting into
Japanese society and strengthening national pride at the same time.
According to President Jin, the significance of national pride is
the same to all the students, that is, Chinese students should be
proud of being Chinese and Japanese students be proud of being Japanese.
The ability of cooperation with and consideration for people from
different countries are highly deemed. Students are also expected
to be active contributor to friendship between China and Japan.
Courses are set followed these principles:
1. Nine years continuous education, ranging from the primary to
the junior education, is carried on in the language of Chinese.
2. In the primary department, the textbook for the language of Japanese
are the same shared by Japanese schools. Other textbooks are all
written in Chinese (textbook for mathematics is translated from
the Japanese textbook. Others such as Social Science use Chinese
teaching materials, with the Japanese textbook as reference.)
3. In the Secondary Department, Japanese textbooks are adopted except
for courses such as Language of Chinese, Geography of China and
History of China. But courses are all given in Chinese and students
kept their notes in Japanese.
4. Textbook for Language of Chinese, Geography of China and History
of China are edited by the faculty on its own.
5. Training of skills also bears national characters. For example,
Chinese local music, making of dumpling.
